Writing for Money: An Introduction

The fact that you are reading this article probably means that you want the opportunity to make money doing something you love, doing something you’re good at. You want to take your writing talent and turn it into something that is really profitable for you. This post is not going to show you how to start writing for money; instead I am going to tell you to the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of writing for money. I’ll give you an unbiased and insider’s view of what the field is like so you can know what you are getting into and be prepared. If you are a beginner and writing for money online is an industry that you want to try your luck in, then I highly recommend that you read this commentary before you embark on your journey.

Writing for money is not a career path you should take if you do not have some serious resolve. I don’t say that because people don’t make money writing articles or because writing is something that is terribly hard and not enjoyable. I’m not trying to discourage your either. I will teach you how you can make a significant amount of cash writing for money. The problem is that writing is a very saturated field. For every great writing idea you have, there are hundreds of other people out there with ideas that are just as good. For every market you try to penetrate, you will have dozens of other writers competing against you.

Again, I am not trying to discourage you from becoming a writer. In fact, I believe that writing is one of the most lucrative and simplest ways to make money online. I wouldn’t have started this site if I didn’t believe that you have the potential to make money online. And I place a lot of emphasis on the word  “potential.” When I tried to crack into the writing field a few years back, the income I was made was an amazing 12 cents a month. Chancesare without the proper knowledge and tools, that is the path you will be heading down. But now (after hard work and a lot of tough lessons) I make in the thousands each month and I truly believe that you can do it too.

I am not going to sugar coat anything. I am just trying to open your eyes to the reality of starting a writing career online. I think a lot of people have the misconception that they can make thousands in a few hours without doing any real work. That brings me back to that word potential. You do have the potential to make 10, 500, or maybe even 1,000s of dollars each month. But it won’t always be fun and games. You are going to actually have to do work. And believe it or not, you are going to have to write lots of qualitymaterial.

But without the proper insight into the online writing market, you are heading for a very disappointingly short career. There are a lot of “get rich quick” schemes out there on the web. I know, I must have tried at least half of them. They seem really good at first. The premise was that I only had to spend a few bucks initially, and I would make back enough money to payfor the full cost while still turning a profit. Needless to say, I’ve lost a lot of money in those “online investments.” But I did learn some very valuable lessons that still help me today:

1.       There is no substitute for hard work

The common denominator of all those “get rich quick” schemes is that they require you to do nothing while your money is still somehow tripling each month. Trust me, I’ve been at this business for many years now and if there is one piece of advice that I can give you that you can base your whole online business venture on is that “the amount of money you make will be almost exactly proportional to the amount of effort you put in.” Remember that. Right it down. Don’t try to take the easy way out. In the end you will always be disappointed.

2.       You make the most money being your own boss

Say that you happen to stumble upon one of those “get rich quick” plan which actually happens to be legit and makes you money. The amount you will be earning will be a tiny fraction of how much money you will be giving back to the top dog. Your earning potential will be the greatest when you get to keep all the money that is being made through your efforts. While you’re out there working hard to make a few bucks, some guy is sittingdown at his couch sipping tea and watching football while his accounts is piling up with money. Don’t go down that road.

Now, let’s cover some important things that you have to know before you start your venture writing for money.

Know what you’re getting into

You are on the right road by reading this article. But this article alone won’t cover it. I have a lot more information to give you that is not in this article because it is just an introduction. There are also plenty of other highly successful and professional sources that I can point you too that will give you valuable lessons. The more you know about writing for money before you start, the smoother your transaction will be into this field and the quicker you’ll see your revenue grow.

Most of the experts online, including me, had to learn through trial and error. We’ve made many mistakes, lost a lot of money, and came reallyclose to giving up several times. You don’t have to go down that road. You can benefit from our knowledge and experience and avoid the mistakes that we made. You need to surround yourself with a group of people who have succeeded in what you are trying to do and are willing to teach you. There will be a lot of people who will try to sell you some “amazing business tips” that will make your writing career take off!! But, from my experience, the best information you will ever get is from free blogs like this one from veterans. Again, I know of many resources that you can look at, but I will get into those in later post.

Be professional

If you want to even have the chance of retiring at a ridiculously young age (like a few people) and live off the income that you make from writing for money, then you are going to have to treat this like work. Even if you don’t plan on making that much money, your income won’t ever be substantial unless you put in as much professionalism and dedication into this as if it were your main job.

Writing online is a very diverse field. There is literally dozens and dozens of different ways for you to make money. However, in all of them, the people who are making the most money are the professional ones who show excellence in all of their business matters down to their writing. If you are going to write crap, then you are going to get paid crap. It’s that simple. Being a writer is a great opportunity because you will have a chance to build a reputation and a client base. The better you reputation, the more value your writings will have. Having clients means a steady revenue stream. You should try to build both and being professional is the best way to accomplish that.

Have a plan

I can’t stress this point enough. I’ve told you before that there are dozens of ways to make money online and I wasn’t lying. The problem that a lot of people that I’ve coach in past is that they go running off on tangents instead of focusing on one project at a time. Having a plan will keep you focused.

A lot of people complain that they just aren’t making the kind of money writing as they were lead to believe they could. When I examine what they have been doing for the past couple of weeks I see a common trend: they are jumping from opportunity to opportunity. That will never work. Yes it is good to have multiple income sources and to diversify your portfolio, but if you leave one opportunity before it is truly mature then it will never make the kind of money it would if you would have put a little more time into it. Build a business plan, set some goals and keep at it until you meet all of your goals.

Now this is the part where I will try to boost your confidence and fuel your optimism if you had any doubts that you could make a significant amount of cash writing for money.  The fact is that there is billions of dollars flowing through the internet each month. I’m not exaggerating. If you could somehow wrap up the internet into one big company and measure how much money flow in and out of it, that number would be astronomical.

The money is there, the question is how to tap into it. You have a skill, writing. Somehow, you want to use that to earn some extra cash. The good news for you is that good writing is in very high demand online. If you think about it, words are one of the main building blocks to the internet. Yes there are videos, music, and games, but can you imagine a browsing experience without a single word? It probably would not be any fun at all. Words and the internet will always go hand in hand. You are a master of words, of communicating. You are a writer. You can make a living writing for money.

Google, the biggest online company in the world, understands the importance of good content. It has based its multi-billion dollar advisement plans around content. Google wants to put its ads on relevant pages that have informative, entertaining, or engaging content on it. Google understands that great content is what drives a large portion of people to the internet. If Google believes in content so much (and so far it has worked out great for them), then why shouldn’t you?

I hope that you see the wonderful opportunity that lies before you. I hope that you have enough vision to see how writing for money can really change your life. I want to help you reach your goals.
